I don't feel much like adding to the general shrieking and arm-waving about who wants whom to die and when, but I do feel like stating that every adult in the U.S. has the privilege and responsibility to direct his/her own medical care, and most don't take advantage of that. POLST forms and advanced directives are considered the arena of the elderly and chronically ill when, in fact, anybody over the age of 18 can- and absolutely
should- make their wishes known to their family and medical providers. My grandmother (again with the elderly) keeps a copy of her forms on her refrigerator in case she's taken to the hospital and her records cannot be accessed.
This page should be a direct resource to make your wishes known with advanced directives/POLST forms. I don't care if you're 18 or 80, if you're an adult, you should decide what will happen to you if you're in a hospital in a situation where you can't speak for yourself- you can make this decision by yourself, in consultation with your doctor, your family, your rabbi, I don't care- but you should make it.
And godDAMN am I tired of the bipolar insanity that we call politics today. Some people are assholes; this doesn't change, but it doesn't mean that everyone who thinks Not Like You is a rabid mouthbreathing moron.
